Call for Papers
Postgraduate students are invited to submit proposals for the upcoming conference 'Social Theory Beyond Whiteness'.
We're living in a time where social sciences are becoming increasingly reflexive. This reflexivity has recently involved a growing awareness of, and efforts to dismantle, the dominance of whiteness within the academy. This has led to 'decolonizing' projects across universities, as well as the 'why is my curriculum white?' agenda.
This event will explore, and offer resistance to, whiteness in social theory. Whiteness here will not just be understood as the dominance of 'white' scholars – as whiteness does not just exist in bodies. Rather, whiteness will also be construed as the process by which the lifeworlds, experiences, and social positions of racialised people are systematically ignored in the mainstream, social theory canon.
Papers that address the following three areas are particularly encouraged:
- Papers addressing the dominance of 'white' social theorists in the canon, and the systematic exclusion of those racialised as non-white.
- Papers exploring why 'race-based' theories tend to be excluded from social theory's canon.
- Papers addressing how canonical social theories may be adjusted for the exploration of issues pertaining to race, racialisation, and racism.
