Ray “BEN” Studevent, born to a White mother and Black father, and brought up by a Black mother.
Ray spoke at our members’ December CHAT Zoom telling us about his life growing up as a mixed race young person in a black family and black neighbour hood with light skin and blue eyes. His book, “Black Sheep”, received nominations for a Pulitzer Prize and Book of The Year and is recommended reading for mixed race matters experiences.
There is always more to know, learn and be understood about being mixed race, and the long social history of mixed race people, families and relationships.
“Black Sheep” reveals a side that there is less known or talked about.
A conversation about Ray’s story of abandonment, belonging and identity can be watched here.
There are many more stories from different mixed backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures, some already known, many more still to come.
